Liverpool to make surprise bid for Ryan Bertrand?

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wants to bring Ryan Bertrand to Anfield as part of a new look defensive line up. Bertrand proved to be a useful member of the first team squad last year, but there appears to be some uncertainty about whether or not the left back will be part of new manager Jose Mourinho's plans.

Bertrand has been on the books at Chelsea since 2005 but only really pushed for a first team place last year, as he played understudy to England international Ashley Cole. The defender played a part in over 38 games last year, 19 of those in the Premier League and a further 10 in the domestic cup competitions.

This year Bertrand wants to oust Ashley Cole from his left back spot, but Jose Mourinho is a big fan of Cole and Bertrand could now decide to move Stamford Bridge in search of guaranteed regular first team football.

At Liverpool, the Reds already have Jose Enrique as their first choice left back, but Brendan Rodgers eventually wants to have a new look defence with Glen Johnson on the right and new signing Kolo Toure alongside Daniel Agger in the heart of defence.

It is estimated that £5 million might be enough to persuade Chelsea to sell the 23-year-old.
