Arsenal leave it late to win

Arsenal left it late to win 2-0 against Wigan and to keep Arsenal's superb start to the season on track. It looked like Wigan might frustrate the Gunners and pick up a point, but William Gallas scored in the 83rd minute and Rosicky two minutes later, to keep Arsenal in control on top.

It should've been game early on - if not for Mike Pollitt - as the keeper made memorable stops from Emmanuel Adebayor and Emmanuel Eboue.

However, Marcus Bent could've scored as he headed just over in the first half, and Paul Scharner could've easily put Wigan in front.

Steve Bruce watched on from the stands as caretaker boss Stuart Barlow proved Wigan are more than capable of defending against the top teams, and Titus Bramble proved he was a useful defender as he prevented an Adebayor cross from reaching the path of Theo Walcott.

Arsenal's inability to find top gear was evident, with the untried midfield pairing of Denilson and Lassana Diarra not a match for the unavailable Cesc Fabregas and Mathieu Flamini partnership.

Theo Walcott was impressive throughout, and he could've easily scored two goals if not for some unlucky finishing. He looked strong and direct on the ball, and had the guts to go at the Wigan defence.

Late on, a mix up between defensive partnership Kolo Toure and Gallas presented Bent with a golden opportunity, but he skewed his chance wide.

Then, just as it looked like Wigan might leave the Emirates with three important points, William Gallas got on the end of Bacary Sagna's floated cross to roars of delight at the Emirates.

Arsenal completed the job in the 85th minute when Tomas Rosicky scored after a superb counter attack.

Arsenal are now three points clear at the top with a game in hand.
