Monaco progress as City's European campaign comes to an end
In a game that promised goals after a fascinating first leg, Monaco and Manchester city produced another four goals, as the French side won 3-1 on the night, progressing through to the quarter finals of the Champions League on away goals, after a 6-6 aggregate scoreline.
Guardiola promised that his side would attack from the start in this one, but they found it difficult to create any chances in the opening exchanges, as the home side started well, looking to overturn their two goal deficit.
Just eight minutes into the match, teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe finishing from close range to get Monaco back into the tie. The missing Radamel Falcao had been a talking point pre match, but the rest of the team were showing that they could still perform without him.
Their lead was doubled after half an hour, as Fabinho found space in the box and fired past Caballero. This scoreline would be enough for the Ligue 1 leaders to progress to the quarter finals.
That is how it stayed until the 72nd minute, when in form Leroy Sane tapped home for City, after their best spell of the game. If the visitors could now hold out, it would be them who went through to the next round.
However, just six minutes later, Monaco scored again. A dangerous free kick from the right hand side was headed home by Bakayoko, to once again put Monaco in control. Manchester City were unable to score again, meaning that they crash out of the Champions League, and their hunt for European glory continues.
Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen drew 0-0, resulting in Atletico progressing thanks to their 4-2 first leg win. This means that the eight teams that go into Friday's Champions League quarter final draw are:
Atletico Madrid
Barcelona
Bayern Munich
Borussia Dortmund
Juventus
Leicester City
Monaco
