Former Premier League champions relegated
Ahead of a day of uncertainty in the English Championship, the only thing that we knew was that one big name in the history of English football would be relegated to the third tier, with Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest and Blackburn Rovers all fighting the drop.
All three of those teams knew that relegation was a very real possibility. Birmingham City travelled to Bristol City knowing that a win would secure their Championship status for another season.
The only goal of the game at Ashton Gate came from Birmingham's Che Adams after sixteen minutes. Although a nervous seventy five minutes followed, it was enough for Harry's Redknapp's men to hold on to send a huge sigh of relief around the blue half of England's second city.
Over in the East Midlands, Nottingham Forest had a home time against Ipswich Town at the City Ground. With the game at 0-0, Ipswich were denied an opening goal when young Forest goalkeeper Jordan Smith tipped the effort onto the crossbar with a fantastic save. Forest then took the lead through a Britt Assombalonga penalty. Assomablonga had the chance to score from the spot again in the second half, but saw his effort saved. He did score a great solo goal however, making the score 3-0, after captain Chris Cohen scored from distance.
This all meant that it would be former Premier League champions, Blackburn Rovers, who will be playing their football in League One next season. Tony Mowbray's side did however win their match against Brentford 3-1, but it wasn't enough to save Rovers, who were relegated on goal difference.
