Mauro Icardi: Chelsea's preferred Costa replacement

EXCLUSIVE: Chelsea manager Antonio Conte will do everything in his power to secure a move for Argentinian striker Mauro Icardi this summer. Having told Spain international Diego Costa that he is free to leave Stamford Bridge; Chelsea has identified Icardi as their preferred first choice striker for next season.

Since January, Chelsea has been constantly linked with a move for Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi and with Diego Costa confirmed to leave the Bridge this summer, Icardi is to be lined up as a replacement. Diego Costa is set to open talks with Atletico Madrid, Juventus and at least three Chinese clubs regarding a transfer move this summer.

Icardi had been named as Inter Milan's club captain last year and the 24-year-old former Sampdoria forward is said to be feeling the pressure of responsibility since being given the armband. Icardi is known to be desperate to one day make a move to the Premier League, with London his preferred destination.

Chelsea directors have already been in contact with Inter Milan regarding a move for Icardi and the Blues have been rebuffed in their initial offers for the player. However, Antonio Conte has told his board that the club should do everything they can to sign Icardi; even if his price tag is 100 million euros.

Icardi scored 24 goals in 34 games for Inter Milan in Serie A last season. The striker is desperate to appear for Argentina's national team and is hopeful a move elsewhere will secure regular first team football for his country.
