Per Mertesacker hails 'vintage' Wilshere display following Doncaster win
Arsenal club-captain Per Mertesacker praised the performance of midfielder Jack Wilshere following Wednesday's 1-0 triumph over Doncaster Rovers in the third round League Cup tie.
Theo Walcott scored the only goal of a game which the Gunners dominated until the final minutes, where Doncaster pushed for an equaliser. While Alexis Sanchez would have been the main attraction on the night, it was Wilshere who made the headlines with a solid performance in midfield.
The England international made his first Gunners start in 493 days, but he showed no nervousness on the field as he played like his usual self. Speaking at today's news conference, Mertesacker singled out Wilshere for special praise by insisting that the club saw the 'vintage Jack' in action last night.
“It was very good to have him back. You can see that he’s getting more comfortable with his position now. He’s brave now and he trusts his body," the World Cup winner said, as per Evening Standard.
“He will just grow with that and he was vocal as well, which was important for us, especially at the end. He kept the ball well in tight situations and to come out of that is vintage Jack. That’s what we want to see from him in the future here at Arsenal."
An exclusive from The Star recently claimed Wilshere could push for a winter move to West Ham United after he failed to make the matchday squad versus Chelsea. However, the Doncaster performance may have done enough to earn him a bench role for the upcoming league outing at West Bromwich Albion.
