Arsenal boss issues update on Mohamed Elneny's injury
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that Mohamed Elneny could be sidelined for a while after sustaining an ankle injury against West Ham United on Sunday.
The Egypt international was visibly distraught after being stretchered during the dying stages of the first period, and though any broken bone has been ruled out, Wenger remains pessimitic about the extent of the layoff.
"Unfortunately it doesn't look too good. He has an X-ray, but I don't know how bad it is. But it doesn't look too good," he is quoted as saying by ESPN following the game.
Elneny has been a consistent performer for the Gunners over the past year and this saw him rewarded with a new four-year contract earlier last month.
The ex-Basel man was likely to feature in the possible absence of Jack Wilshere against Atletico Madrid but the club may now have to fast track the latter's return for the midweek game.
