Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has told Jose Mourinho that he will stay with the Bundesliga champions and not come to Manchester United, according to Bild.

United were offered Boateng for £50m, but the player is looking to stay in Germany for another season.

The 2014 World Cup winner reportedly expressed his gratitude to the former Chelsea boss for the interest as he poured cold water on a possible transfer.

United are still in the hunt for a central defender and are eyeing Barcelona's Yerry Mina and Leicester City's Harry Maguire with just over a day left for the transfer window to close in England.

United have already missed out on AC Milan's Leonardo Bonucci, who returned to Juventus after a year at the San Siro.

United still boast of a number of defenders that include Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, and Marcos Rojo.

United sold Dailey Blind to former club Ajax, and are reportedly keen on selling Rojo in order to make room for a new one.
