Manchester United make 'dizzying' offer to sign Lucas Hernandez

Jose Mourinho news

Manchester United have reportedly made a mammoth bid to sign Atletico Madrid star Lucas Hernandez. Jose Mourinho was desperate to sign a central defender in the summer transfer window but United’s board refused to pay over the odds for the likes of Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Jerome Boateng. After a dismal start to the season, with United conceding 14 goals in the Premier League, Mourinho is already looking ahead to January and has spoken with executive vice-chairman about potential targets. According to Spanish outlet Marca, the Red Devils have made a ‘dizzying offer’ for Atleti defender Lucas following his heroics at the 2018 World Cup with France.

It’s claimed United have told Lucas that they will double his current wages if he agrees to complete a move to Old Trafford – and he’s open to the move. Manchester City and Real Madrid are also understood to have tabled bids for the 22-year-old who can play at left back or centre back. The Frenchman, who broke into Atleti’s first-team back in 2014, has an €80m (£70m) buyout clause in his contract.

Lucas was heavily linked with Real Madrid in the summer but the versatile defender rejected a move to the Bernabeu. ‘I didn’t listen to it much. I was 100 percent committed to my club and also had just renewed my contract,’ he told French outlet RMC earlier this week.

‘My agent told me and as soon as he said Madrid were interested I said I couldn’t do it.‘Atletico are my city, my club, they have given me everything. ‘I am an honest person and I couldn’t go to Madrid.’
