Pulisic has to prove himself - Sutton

BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton has said that Christian Pulisic would not have been signed by Chelsea, had Frank Lampard been the manager of the club last season.

The United States international was recruited from Borussia Dortmund at the beginning of 2019 but he was permitted to rejoin the German side on loan for the rest of the campaign.

As such, Pulisic only linked up with his Blues teammates during pre-season and he had to witness a change in management with Lampard replacing Maurizio Sarri at the helm.

Pulisic started the season as a regular under Lampard after a bright pre-season but over the past month, he has fallen out-of-favour with just one substitute appearance in the league.

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, Sutton said that Lampard has no agenda against the attacker but Pulisic needs to prove himself with the competition from the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Mason Mount.

"Pulisic has to prove himself. Frank Lampard has no agenda against him, he’s picking the best possible team to win games of football, that’s his job. He wasn’t Frank’s signing, of course," he told.

Pulisic recently made a 10-minute cameo off the bench against Southampton where he contributed an assist for Michy Batshuayi's goal. He is presently with the USA squad for the Nations League games against Canada and Cuba.
