Germany legend Bastian Schweinsteiger has urged Thomas Muller to consider a move to Manchester United, given he has fallen out-of-favour at Bayern Munich this season.

Muller was hotly tipped to join the Red Devils when Louis van Gaal was the head coach but he turned down their advances, considering he was an important player at the Bundesliga outfit.

However, his situation has changed over the past year and he has been in-and-out of the starting lineup for the German champions, who are currently in the search for a new manager.

Speaking to Bild am Sonntag, Schweinsteiger revealed Van Gaal was keen on signing Muller shortly after he joined the club from Bayern in the summer of 2015.

He added that his compatriot is having a tough time of late in Munich and he could do with a fresh challenge with the Red Devils still said to hold an interest in his services.

"Van Gaal really wanted him, always asked me. What's your friend Thomas [Muller] doing? He would have done us good on United back then," he said. "Thomas is often on the bench lately, a change of air can do him good at the end of his career. He still has great quality."
