Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has said that Anthony Martial must fight for his future at the club and can't afford to drop his performances levels in the coming years.

The Frenchman has played as the main striker after the departure of Romelu Lukaku and he has fared decently with 16 goals from 34 games in all competitions.

Still, the club are on the hunt for an elite striker during the summer and Ferdinand insists Martial needs to perform consistently to preserve his position.

"At big clubs, you've got to fight. That's it. That's what all it boils down to. Can you fight for your position? That's it," Ferdinand said on Instagram Live earlier this month.

"You've got to accept there's going to be an opportunity for someone else to come in and play. But then your performances have got to outweigh everything. You've got to make sure the manager knows."

The Red Devils have been linked with moves for Harry Kane and Erling Haaland in recent weeks and reports have emerged that the latter has a £66m buy-out clause.

Haaland only made the move to Borussia Dortmund from Red Bull Salzburg during the January transfer window but super-agent Mino Raiola was able to insert a release clause in the player's contract.

Apart from a striker, United are said to be eyeing a new central midfielder and a right winger. Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho are the prime targets to strengthen those positions.
