Newcastle United could reportedly compete with the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool in the race to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly this summer.

The Magpies are presently on the verge of a £300m takeover from PCP Capital Partners, who are backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund.

According to Sky Sports News, the Magpies are likely to make a few high-profile signings during the next transfer window and they have identified Koulibaly as one of their main targets.

It is added that he could be available for around £70m in the coming months and the centre-back would favour a move to St James' Park, suppose the proposed takeover is completed.

Magpies owner Mike Ashley has already agreed to sell the club to the new owners but the announcement is expected to be delayed due to the Premier League's owners' and directors' test.

Koulibaly has made over 200 appearances for Napoli over the past six years. He has been one of the most consistent defenders in European football but has failed to win any major trophies at the Naples outfit.
