Newcastle still can secure deal for Man Utd midfielder on deadline day
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has not given up hope that a deal can be agreed to sign Jesse Lingard from Manchester United before the January transfer window closes. The Toon Army, who have £150 million to spend on new players, have been priced out of a move for Lingard.
Man Utd insisted on a £15 million payment to let Lingard leave Old Trafford this month, a figure that Newcastle have so far rejected. Lingard can join the St James' Park outfit in the summer on a free transfer when the England international's contract expires.
Newcastle believe that United have bumped up Lingard's price intentionally, to pocket a hefty fee on a deal that would likely help the Toon Army's relegation survival hopes significantly. Last season Lingard enjoyed a very successful loan spell with West Ham, and it is hoped that the player will have a similar impact this season.
With the window closing in just three days, it is understood that a breakthrough was made today after Man Utd reduced their asking price to release Lingard to just £6.75 million and a further £2 million depending on Newcastle's Premier League survival. Newcastle are considering the counter offer.
