Manchester United have failed to hijack Borussia Dortmund's pursuit of Karim Adeyemi this summer, Sport1 claims.

The Red Devils are expected to sign a couple of strikers this summer, and they are already on the look out for potential targets.

Red Bull Salzburg's Adeyemi has been linked, but the German appears set to join Dortmund at the end of the campaign.

The Bundesliga side are on the cusp of signing him, but Sport1 claims that United recently tried and failed with an approach.

United were willing to offer him a lucrative salary of around £150,000-a-week, but he snubbed them for Champions League football.

Meanwhile, Dortmund have also assured him with a starting role for next season. Adeyemi is expected to replace outbound Erling Haaland.

Haaland has made the decision to move on this summer. Manchester City are odds-on favourites to trigger the release clause on his contract.

United are now expected to look elsewhere. They have been linked with Benfica's Darwin Nunez, but he could cost a club-record £90m fee.
