Arsenal now need to invest for league success

07 June 2015 - 01:47

Somehow Arsene Wenger reversed Arsenal's early season misfortunes but must now spend to secure Premier League success.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • "Sack Arsene Wenger," was the cry from a large portion of Arsenal's home support midway through the season, but a stunning reversal in form in mid-January has meant that those same fans are now singing an old favourite tune again, "One Arsene Wenger, there's only one Arsene..."

Logically, it makes sense for club supporters to be happier if your team is winning silverware. Two FA Cup's in a row has firmly etched Arsene Wenger in the tournament's history as the Frenchman guided Arsenal to a record breaking 12th FA Cup success.

Many at Arsenal are still questioning the club's manager. The Premier League is what the fans want and what they expect.

For Arsenal last season it was a case of what might have been, as well. A Champions League capitulation to lowly Monaco and a disappointing start to the league campaign meant that Arsenal were never truly in the title race, despite coming somewhat close during the last month of the season.

For Arsene Wenger now, there can be only one target. This summer will be crucial for Arsenal. For two summers in a row, Wenger has shown he will spend money, signing world class duo Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez. For a third summer in a row, this has to be the case yet again.

The foundations of a quality team are there. With dynamic full back duo Hector Bellerin and Nacho Monreal almost guaranteed to be in the first XI next season, Arsene Wenger may only need to invest in a central defender. Per Mertesacker has never pretended to be able to compete with the division's quickest strikers, maybe Arsenal will need to invest there.

In defensive midfield, the emerge of Coquelin will give Arsenal food for thought. Has the youngster already proven himself? The attacking midfield array of talent ahead of him will give Arsene Wenger a selection headache.

But what about up front? Arsene will need to decide if Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck are strong enough to mount a serious title challenge.

If the rumours about Gonzalo Higuain are indeed true, you might well see Arsenal challenging for first place next season.
