West Brom eye Everton star as Fletcher replacement

West Bromwich Albion will reportedly step up their pursuit to sign Everton's James McCarthy after losing club captain Darren Fletcher to Stoke City on a free transfer.

  • Mauricio Pochettino confirms fresh injury blow for Chelsea star
  • Arsenal want to make four marquee signings this summer

  • The Scotland international had initially agreed a one-year extension with the west Midlands outfit, but a move to Mark Hughes' team was just too good to refuse for the former Manchester United graduate.

According to The People, the Baggies are on the search for a new central midfielder following Fletcher's exit, and McCarthy is said to fit Tony Pulis' bill.

Pulis wants a dynamic presence at the heart of his midfield, and McCarthy could be offered a lifeline after his struggles with Everton last season.

McCarthy currently finds himself behind the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Idrissa Gueye in the pecking order and Ronald Koeman is happy to let him leave, should his £15m valuation be met.

Recently-promoted Newcastle United are also monitoring the player's developments, but they are reluctant to come close to the price tag.
