Brazil international and Paris Saint Germain skipper Thiago Silva has signed a contract extension with his current club ending weeks of speculation surrounding his future.

The 28 year old moved to the Parc des Princes last summer from AC Milan and was subsequently appointed captan of the Paris club by then manager Carlo Ancelotti

Having helped his side to a historic Ligue 1 triumph last season, Silva saw his stocks rise significantly this summer and was reported to be Barcelona's top target this transfer window. The former Milan center half was believed to be interested in a move but the French club moved quickly to offer him an improved contract and tie him down at the club for a long time.

"We are very proud to extend Thiago's contract, he's an exceptional player both on and off the field," club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said in a statement.

"He symbolises the aim of PSG to construct one of the top performing teams in Europe."

Barcelona have been in constant search of a central defender this summer and have also shortlisted Chelsea's David Luiz as one of the potential targets.
