Manchester United are favoured by bookies to sign Chelsea defender Gary Cahill, according to the Daily Star.

The England international is reportedly considering his future with The Blues' pursuit of Italian defender Daniele Rugani.

The 32-year-old could serve as an alternative for United target Leonardo Bonucci should they fail to sign the AC Milan defender.

United have been given a boost in their pursuit of Bonucci with the former Juventus man reportedly handing in a transfer request at the San Siro.

From the transfer information this summer, it is clear that United are looking for a central defender, and United have been linked with experience players in that position so far.

Jose Mourinho is probably looking for experienced players who can lead the other defenders to sustain a tight back.

United's moves in the transfer suggests that Mourinho is not very satisfied with the performance of his current central defenders.

With the departure of Daley Blind who can also play as a centre-back, United currently have Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, and Marcos Rojo as central defenders.
