Arsenal crumble at the Bridge

Arsenal crumble at the Bridge

Arsenal's Premiership ambitions crumbled at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon as that man Didier Drogba continued his superb run against the Gunners, bagging both goals in a 2-1 victory. Arsenal have dropped 11 points in the race for the title many had already predicted they would win as Man Utd now sit five points clear on top of the table.

Arsenal drop down to third as they have slumped to probably their worst run of results for some time, and Chelsea will feel lucky that they have clung on to their impressive home unbeaten run.

Now, the title is there for Chelsea's to battle for, and Arsenal find themselves as a bit of a spare tyre in the race for the Premiership.

The game started at a frenetic pace, as both sets of fans jeered William Gallas and Ashley Cole whenever they touched the ball.

Chelsea seemed to dominate the opening exchanges, with Joe Cole coming close to breaking the deadlock.

But, by far the best chance was when William Gallas headed the ball against the post when the ball looked destined for the net.

The Gunners seemed to perk up, and Fabregas was starting to settle in the midfield - but Adebayor cut a lonesome figure up front alone.

Into the second half, and Arsenal came up trumps in the 63rd minute as Bacary Sagna headed in from a Cesc Fabregas corner to send the travelling supports into raptures.

The Gunners desperately tried to cling on; but an injury to their goalscorer Sagna saw a five minute gap in play, which seemed to bring Chelsea alive.

Avram Grant brought on Nicolas Anelka for Michael Ballack, and took off Claude Makelele to the dismay of the Chelsea fans who chanted "you don't know what you're doing" at the Israeli boss.

Then, you may consider this somewhat of a tactical masterstroke as the move paid dividends as Didier Drogba bagged an equaliser within two minutes.

Just as the Gunners looked to head back on the attack, Chelsea parried with a counter, heaving a ball long for Nicolas Anelka who headed the ball down into the path of Drogba, who hit the ball into the net following a flailing save from Almunia.

The ball is still firmly in Man United's court, but now Chelsea have a very real chance of coming back into the title race.

The Arsenal fans will now reflect back on a Premiership challenge that could've been; and perhaps should've been.
