Arsenal set to complete first winter signing, player arrives for medical
Arsenal are reportedly set to make their first winter signing with defender Pablo Mari on course to join the club from Brazilian champions Flamengo.
The 26-year-old only made the move to Flamengo from Manchester City six months ago but he has hugely impressed, having helped his side win the Serie A and Copa Libertadores titles.
According to Goal.com, the Gunners have agreed to sign the centre-back for an initial £1.5m loan fee with the option to buy for around £7m when the season comes to a close.
The Spaniard was recently spotted at the Heathrow airport alongside Gunners chief Edu and reports indicate that he will have a medical with the club in the next 24 hours before the transfer announcement is made.
Mari's move is expected to cover up the injury absence of Calum Chambers for the season. It remains to be seen whether he will command a starting role ahead of either Sokratis or David Luiz in the coming months.
Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding are the other options at hand for Arteta for the central defensive role but the duo have yet to cement a regular spot under the Gunners boss.
