Aston Villa in pole position to sign Digne
Aston Villa have emerged as favourites to sign Everton defender Lucas Digne. Steven Gerrard's side have leapfrogged Newcastle and Chelsea in to pole position to secure the French left-back.
Rafa Benitez, the Everton manager, revealed that in recent weeks the Toffees defender has requested a move away from Goodison Park. Half a dozen Premier League teams have already shown interest in the dead ball expert, with Tottenham, Chelsea, Newcastle and two other sides in the race to sign the France international.
However, it is understood that Aston Villa have moved a step forward in their pursuit having already agreed a fee with Everton for Digne. Villa have given their new manager Steven Gerrard a budget of £80 million for new players, and Everton have accepted a £22.5 million bid for the full-back.
The 28-year-old had a high profile falling out with manager Rafa Benitez and has struggled for first-team action in recent months.
Digne arrived at Everton from Barcelona in 2018 and has 18 months remaining on his deal at Goodison Park.
