Man Utd end Arsenals hopes

Man Utd end Arsenal's hopes

13 April 2008 - 20:45

Arsenal's Premiership challenge came to a grinding halt at Old Trafford today as the Gunners' terrible luck continued. The Gunners dominated most of the first half and took an early lead through Emmanuel Adebayor, but moments later Cristiano Ronaldo scored from the spot and an Owen Hargreaves free kick wrapped up the three points.

  • United have surged six points clear in their title challenge after ending Arsenal's remote chances of winning the title. It was a disappointing end to a season that looked so good for the Gunners.

Arsenal went close several times through Emmanuel Adebayor, who should've done better on at least three occasions to put the Gunners in front.

In fact, Arsenal looked the better side for most of the first half and Old Trafford seemed to look concerned with the challenge from the visitors.

Shortly after half time, the Gunners finally made the break through. Robin van Persie crossed from the left and with United's defenders leaving the ball for keeper Edwin Van der Sar; but Adebayor nipped in to touch the ball home with his arm.

Arsenal could've gone further in front as Rio Ferdinand fired the ball at his own goalkeeper.

Moments later, the Gunners would throw it away - very similarly to how they have several times in the last few months - as William Gallas would hand ball in the area needlessly to give away a penalty.

It took two attempts before the goal was given; but Cristiano Ronaldo fired the ball into the bottom left corner nicely past stand in goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.

Then, Arsenal would self-destruct. The Gunners struggled to get hold of the ball as Owen Hargreaves and Anderson bossed the midfield, and the young Gunners looked increasingly tired.

Man Utd eventually got their reward as Owen Hargreaves fired a perfectly-executed 20-metre free kick over the wall and into the bottom corner of Jens Lehmann's net.

Arsenal had a couple of late forays forward; and Nicklas Bendtner should have easily scored but for the excellent goalkeeping from Edwin van der Sar.

And that was it; the walls came crumbling down on Arsenal's championship challenge, and Arsenal's season was over after a couple of months full of disappointing results.

For Manchester United, however, the title looks destined to remain at Old Trafford.
