Why Arsenal must sign Gonzalo Higuain, and fast

The time is ticking; Gunners supporters all over the world await the signing of Higuain, but many fear there could be a last minute change of events.

Last summer, Arsenal decided to part company with Robin van Persie, as the Dutch striker had just 12 months left on his contract. Unbeknownst to any Arsenal fans at the time, manager Arsene Wenger had already begun negotations with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Within a matter of days, van Persie was then paraded as a United supporter. Arsenal fans were furious that such a gifted player, and their club captain, could be sold to one of their most bitter rivals.

Arsene Wenger's acquisitions of Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud were both praised. Both were international strikers for their respective home countries of France and Germany, and both had won medals at the top level for their former teams. However, Arsenal still had not been able to successfully bring in a marquee signing to replace RvP. What Arsenal really wanted was a Edinson Cavani, Hulk, Radamel Falcao... a Gonzalo Higuain.

11 months since the van Persie transfer, Arsenal are now linked with Real Madrid's striker Gonzalo Higuain. The scene is set. Higuain has already told Real Madrid that he wants to leave the club after several successful years at the Bernabeu. Higuain's father and brother have also admitted that Arsenal are in pole position to sign the Argentine. It looks like Arsenal can finally replace van Persie with a truly world class finisher.

Juventus were interested in Higuain, but instead decided to sign Carlos Tevez from Man City instead; seemingly ending their interest in the Real Madrid striker. Arsenal truly are in pole position; for some reason there appears to be no interest in the striker from elsewhere, despite Higuain's excellent record at the highest level. For Real, Higuain scored 107 goals in 187. Considering that a lot of the playing time Higuain received at Real came from the bench, this is truly a massive achievement.

Arsenal must hurry to sign Higuain. The more time they take discussing terms with Real Madrid for the player, the more time there is for a potential transfer hijack. Numerous clubs have been linked with the forward in recent weeks, even Manchester City are now credited with an interest.

For many, Arsenal missing out on Higuain will be a cruel reminder of Arsenal's inability to compete with the best on the transfer market. The truth is that Arsene Wenger now has to pay the money to acquire the best players on the market. The signing of Yaya Sanogo is indeed a great one for the future, but he is far too young to be thrust into the Arsenal first team.

Gervinho and Lukas Podolski have also both reportedly been linked with moves away from Arsenal, should either player leave the club should move quickly to bring in another striker. That striker should only be Higuain.
