Liverpool step up their pursuit of Ryan Bertrand
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will stop at nothing to sign Chelsea's second choice left back Ryan Bertrand. The player, who has so far found himself a reserve player under Jose Mourinho, has found Ashley Cole and Branislav Ivanovic preferred in the left back role by the Blues' manager.
The 24-year-old, who has been on the books at Stamford Bridge since 2005, has played only 1 Premier League game this season despite having played in 19 games last year under Rafa Benitez. In addition, Bertrand has only played twice more in the domestic cup competitions and Liverpool are now ready to step up their interest in the England international full back.
With first choice left back at Liverpool Jose Enrique set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines which could leave him out of action until March, Brendan Rodgers is now looking for a replacement signing and Bertrand appears to be his preference. The England international is wanted on a two month loan deal but Chelsea are known to be ready to sell Bertrand for around £5.75 million.
England manager Roy Hodgson has reportedly spoken with Bertrand and told the player that he must play regular first team football if he wants to be a part of the squad that flies out to Brazil for next summer's World Cup tournament.
Other teams are also interested in the defender, with Manchester United also a surprise candidate for his signature. Manager David Moyes is already looking for a defender that will be an eventual replacement for Patrice Evra and has today been linked with a deal for Porto's Alex Sandro as well as having a long term interest in Everton's Leighton Baines. However, Ryan Bertrand has now emerged as a shock potential signing for Man Utd next summer.
