Bolton extend Arsenal's lead

Bolton extend Arsenals lead

Bolton picked up a memorable three points against Man Utd today as Gary Megson's side helped Arsenal extend their lead at the top. Ironically, ex-Arsenal striker Nicolas Anelka grabbed the winning goal for Bolton.

In what was a typical 'battling' performance from Bolton, Nicolas Anelka grabbed the only goal of the game in the 11th minute as Arsenal continued their march at the top of the league.

It wasn't an easy performance for Bolton to pick up, as Manchester United peppered Bolton's goal with shots all game, and Louis Saha should've grabbed at least two goals in Wayne Rooney's absence.

Gerard Pique came in at central defence for the injured Nemanja Vidic, and looked solid and composed throughout.

Bolton created the initial attack on the United goal when former Real Madrid player Ivan Campo got hold of the ball at the edge of the United 18-yard box however he failed to aim the ball goalwards.

In the 11th minute Gary Megson’s side stunned the Red Devils as Nicolas Anelka, who has won the admiration of United boss Sir Alex Ferguson for his tactful play, fired home the ball from close range off Campo’s perfect free-kick.

Meanwhile, an out-of-sorts United were left frustrated as Jussi Jaaskelainen kept out Owen Hargreaves' free-kick and Carlos Tevez screwed wide in the box.

Bolton shut up shop and Jussi Jaaskelainen in goal held firm to give Bolton a hugely important three points and help Arsenal extend their lead at the top.
