Arsenal keen on signing Schalke star

Arsenal are reportedly lining up an offer for one of Germany's best defenders, according to The Telegraph.

The Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is well aware of the club's defensive frailties, and has already signed up the likes of Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers for the right-back role.

However, the departure of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona has left a void in the central defence, which needs to be filled considering the absence of Per Mertesacker for the start of the new league campaign due to World Cup duties.

According to The Telegraph, the Gunners could make a move for one of the best defenders from the Bundesliga in Benedikt Howedes this summer.
