Is it time for Arsene Wenger to go?

Arsene Wenger news

Arsene Wenger

What a miserable year it has been for Arsenal. Two FA Cup wins on the spin looked like the start of a reverse of fortunes; but the Gunners will end 2015-16 trophyless.

What has happened at Arsenal?

Last season Arsene Wenger seemed to be reversing the Gunners' fortunes after leading Arsenal to a second consecutive FA Cup. This season, Arsenal are out of the domestic competition, seem to be out of the title race and crashed out of the Champions League to Barcelona (yet again).

Arsene Wenger's philosophies changed the English footballing game. In recent years though, his policy to bring through youth hasn't always worked. Consider the likes of Nicklas Bendtner and Denilson; the type of players that couldn't get near the quality of a certain Cesc Fabregas. Wenger's policy seemed to be changing when he brought in the talented Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez; but what seems to be his problem now is that he can't get his players performing on the pitch.

Why won't he just spend money?

Many Arsenal fans have questioned why last summer Petr Cech was the club's only major signing. January, with Arsenal top of the league and charging to the title, was the chance for Wenger to make a move in the transfer market. The little known Mohamed Elneny came in from Basel (although he is starting to show signs of being a very good player); but this clearly wasn't enough. Wenger should have brought in a top class striker to replace Olivier Giroud; who appears to have reached the best of his potential which is not comparable with the likes of Diego Costa, Wayne Rooney or Sergio Aguero. Arsenal simply were missing a striker and refused to spend money. Why?

Is it time for Arsene Wenger to go?

For many, the answer will always be no. Arsenal fans are grateful for what Wenger has brought to the club year after year. They remain fiercely loyal to the Frenchman. But for the vast majority; it's a yes. People just want change. People don't just need silverware, they want to see performances on the pitch that don't lead to disappointment. Fans are starting to be disappointed that Barcelona beat the Gunners every year and that the money is not being spent. FA Cup success has quietened that group but now they are at their most vocal.

This summer will be interesting. Will he stay? Is it time for him to retire? If he does leave, who will replace him?
