Arsenal manager Unai Emery has confirmed that Granit Xhaka has been stripped from the captaincy following the unforeseen incident with the fans last month.

The Swiss international recently sent a public apology to the club's faithful for his angry reaction after he was booed off the field during the 2-2 league draw against Crystal Palace.

Xhaka has since missed the Premier League clash against Wolves and Emery has now confirmed that the midfielder has been stripped from the leadership role after a discussion with the first-team squad.

The Spanish tactician added that Xhaka would continue to remain unavailable for the forthcoming Europa League game at Vitoria, where a win would seal the Gunners' qualification to the next round of the Europa League.

Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi were the preferred midfield pairing during the recent league clash but Unai Emery is likely to rest them with Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Joe Willock probably candidates to start.
