Man Utd and Wayne Rooney set for clear the air talks

Wayne Rooney, his representatives, David Moyes and club executives will hold discussions next week regarding the future of the England international. The forward is looking for assurances that he will be given a new contract and that he will be playing as a striker for the year ahead alongside Robin van Persie.

Towards the end of last season Rooney controversially told then manager Sir Alex Ferguson that he was unhappy at Old Trafford playing second fiddle to RvP. The following day, the England forward found himself out of United's first team and would spend the remainder of the season on the sidelines.

This frustrated Rooney even more, and the former Everton forward would then be linked with a move to some of Europe's biggest teams, with the likes of Chelsea and PSG both mooted as potential destonations.

Despite reports that Rooney still wants to leave Man Utd, the club hope that an amicable discussion will take place and that they can persuade Rooney that he will be an important member of the first team next year and even will consider a new contract for the 27-year-old.

Rumours that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will make an official approach for the player this week continue, and Roman Abramovich's side are not put off by the reported  £41 million pricetag.
