5 reasons to get Brendan Rodgers as next England manager

Brendan Rodgers

With Roy Hodgson looking at signing a contract extension to take him into the next World Cup, lets look beyond this (as it may not be possible to get too excited before he is gone) to the next potential manager. Here are 5 reasons why it would be prudent to include Brendan Rodgers in the thinking.

1. He plays in the right style - his attacking / counter attacking brand of football is attractive to watch and he utilizes the players at his disposal to maximize this style. In short he ensures there are round pegs in round holes. The quick tempo he's introduced during his time at Liverpool is refreshing to watch. How good would it be to see England playing at this speed with quality too?

2. He may want to - Yes this is a strange point but a valid one. Name one other rising British manager who is either good enough, or would want to take the poison chalice on? Fergie never did and regularly rebuffed requests from the FA. Let's make sure they don't wait too long and get Brendan Rodgers in to the fold. Under 21's, juniors, development squads, it's worthwhile asking him to get involved at some level if possible, to ensure his buy-in later on down the line.

3. Nurturing English talent - At Liverpool, Brendan Rodgers has some of the best English attacking players in the Premiership. Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge have in the past season or so oozed quality and are able to play cultured, diverse, quick tempo, attacking football. Why wouldn't England fans want a manager who is able to nurture and develop these kind of players?

4. Sees potential and turns it into quality - The qualities of Sturridge and Lallana have been proven in the last season for Liverpool and Southampton respectively. After a slow start (injuries allowing) they are now starting to play how the manager wants them to. Bring Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson into the equation and Liverpool have bags of potentially great players. Further more, Jordan Henderson is now starting to show the quality that Brendan Rodgers insisted was within him. Being given the captains' armband in the absence of Steven Gerrard has brought the 24 year old into the limelight and it is clear he is not afraid of the challenge. This is down to the faith that Brendan Rodgers placed in him and how he has nurtured and developed this potential in whom some people are now calling 'the next Gerrard'. High praise indeed.

5. His stock is growing - The last 2 England managerial appointments, Fabio Capello and present incumbent Roy Hodgson (ignoring Stuart Pearce's single game against the Netherlands in 2012) were arguably past their best. Capello declared it his "last managerial post" before retirement and Mr Hodgson took up the mantle after a failed stint at Liverpool from which they are only just recovering. Brendan Rodgers is a young manager with an increasing reputation and growing C.V.

Now is the time to start planning for the next England manager and it needs to be an appointment with a thorough knowledge of the English game, a full understanding and clarity of vision to take a team forward, a young manager with tactical acumen and an ambition to develop a team in the long term.

Let's get him into the England fold ASAP.
