Manchester United legend Paul Scholes feels Wayne Rooney could call quits on his Red Devils career following his struggles under Jose Mourinho this season.

The club's all-time goalscorer has been in-and-out of the starting lineup since September, and Scholes claims that he would not be surprised if the 31-year-old does leave Old Trafford in the summer.

"If it carries on going the way it is, I can't [see him staying for two more years]. Maybe it will be reassessed at the end of the season if he's in and out of the team," he told the Mail.

"I don't see him as a player who will accept that. He will want to be at a team where he's playing every week. "

Rooney has seen the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Juan Mata occupy the wing positions this term, whilst his preferred centre-forward role has been satisfied by the ever-impressive Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The England international will play no part in his side's last-32 first leg tie against Saint-Etienne this evening as he is still carrying a minor muscular problem.
