Gunners humiliated again

Vidal chips over Ospina for Bayern's fourth goal

On a night where Arsenal needed nothing short of a miracle to progress to the quarter finals of the Champions League, most fans were not expecting to qualify for the next round, instead hoping to see their team put up a fight and at least win the second leg. Those fans did not get their wish, as Bayern Munich won 5-1 again, giving them a 10-2 aggregate victory.

The game started well for Arsenal, putting together some good passing moves, topped off with a goal, when Theo Walcott smashed the ball into the top of the goal from an awkward angle after twenty minutes.

That's how it stayed until half time, and with their side needing three more goals without reply, Arsenal fans cheered their team on more in hope than expectation. However, much like the first leg, they were about to witness a second half collapse.

Nine minutes after the break, Laurent Koscielny conceded a penalty. He was originally shown a yellow card, but after consulting with the other officials, the referee upgraded it to red. Robert Lewandowski scored the spot kick, meaning that at 1-1 and down to ten men, Arsenal needed four goals just to force extra time.

The Gunners then collapsed completely, with Bayern Munich scoring four goals in a seventeen minute period. Arjen Robben gave the visitors the lead before a fantastic Douglas Costa solo goal. Arturo Vidal sealed it for the Germans and piled on the humiliation for Arsenal with a late brace.

After a 10-2 aggregate defeat for Arsenal, it really is hard to find any positives. The Gunners have now crashed out of Europe at the final 16 stage for the last seven seasons. Under pressure manager Arsene Wenger will now undoubtedly face even more questions about his future at the club.
