Chelsea may sign Dutch midfielder instead of Declan Rice
Chelsea could reportedly make an attempt to sign Marten de Roon from Atalanta when the transfer window reopens at the turn of the year.
The Blues were eager to sign a central midfielder before the international transfer deadline and they were heavily linked with a move for Declan Rice.
However, they were unable to negotiate his transfer from West Ham United, who were reluctant to accept anything less than £80m.
According to The Express, the west London side may look to reinforce their midfield options in the New Year and De Roon is apparently a target.
De Roon had a disappointing 2016/2017 loan spell with Middlesbrough, but he has since revived his career with the Serie A outfit.
He has been integral in their top-four finish over the past two seasons and the Blues are weighing up a possible winter move.
Chelsea are seventh in the standings after four games into the campaign. They are scheduled to host Southampton after the international break.
