Arsenal midfielder given green light to join Roma

Maitland-Niles allowed to join Roma

Arsenal midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles has been given permission by manager Mikel Arteta to secure a winter move to Roma.

The England international has barely started games for the Gunners this term, and he is now close to joining the Giallorossi on loan.

The north London club were initially reluctant to sanction the deal amid the lack of midfield options. Arteta has now given the go-ahead.

Maitland-Niles will join the Serie A outfit on a straight-loan deal. Roma will need to negotiate a permanent move separately in the summer.

Meanwhile, the 24-year-old's exit could leave the Gunners with Granit Xhaka and Albert Sambi Lokonga as the only specialist senior midfield options.

Highly-rated Charlie Patino has yet to make his Premier League debut. Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny are away on African Cup of Nations duty.

They have been fancied to sign another central midfielder. Renato Sanches, Bruno Guimaraes and Georginio Wijnaldum are among the players who have been linked. x
