Hernandez scrapes late draw for Man Utd

Manchester United's Javier Hernandez was on hand to score a late equalizer to see the Red Devils come back from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Liverpool at Anfield. Steven Gerrard had earlier put the home side in front after converting a free kick.

In a game labelled as the world's greatest prior to kick off by Sir Alex Ferguson, this game offered very little for spectators as these two giants went head to head in Saturday's early Premier League kick off.

Both teams adopted interesting looking 4-5-1 formations, with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez dropped to the bench for United, whilst Steven Gerrard made his long awaited return to the Liverpool line up.

These defensive style formations meant the first half was rather conservative in nature, with the best effort of note falling to makeshift midfielder Phil Jones, who had moved forward from defence for this game. Patrice Evra made a mazy run down the left flank and sent in a cross for the former Blackburn man, whose header just slipped wide of Pepe Reina's post.

Indeed, it would also be a special day for summer signing David De Gea, who kept out Luis Suarez's stunning effort in the 34th minute .

Moving into the second half, the pace picked up noticeably and Dirk Kuyt would feel unlucky as Jonny Evans appeared to handle a goalbound chance; but the referee refused calls for a penalty.

Finally, the first goal would arrive as Steven Gerrard stepped up with a free kick. Charlie Adam had been fouled by Rio Ferdinand on the edge of the box and it was up to Stevie G to convert with a low shot into the goal.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson then brought on Nani, Rooney and Hernandez for the last 20 minutes and it immediately paid dividends.

Mexican striker Hernandez scored the equalizer with an assist from Danny Welbeck.

David De Gea kept United in the game late on with an excellent save from Dirk Kuyt, and the draw was secured.

Man of the match would arguably be Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea, who is starting to prove his worth after the 20m GBP transfer move during the summer.
