4th spot chasing Chelsea and Tottenham draw
London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham opened Saturday afternoon's Premier League action with a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge. The result will leave Harry Redknapp the happier manager, as his side now remain 5 points ahead of the Blues in the Premier League.
Despite Fernando Torres bagging two goals last weekend, the Spaniard could only find a place on the substitutes bench as Didier Drogba took his place.
Chelsea could have had a penalty early on, as Frank Lampard fell in the area under a William Gallas challenge, but the referee waved play on.
A quiet first half saw just one chance of note, as Dutchman Rafael van der Vaart spurned a brilliant opportunity as his first shot bounced off of Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, and his second chance would be rescued by left back Ashley Cole.
In the second half, Daniel Sturridge could have scored as he found space from a Didier Drogba headed pass, but the England forward could only shoot wide.
On 58 minutes, Juan Mata could've broken the deadlock with a curling free kick, but Brad Friedel had to be at his best to keep the scores level.
Tottenham then had three chances of their own, as William Gallas headed over from a free kick, and then Adebayor missed a great chance as he rounded Petr Cech but former Bolton defender Gary Cahill showed his defensive abilities with a wonderful interception.
Finally, Gareth Bale could have wrapped up all three points in the last minute from a free kick, but Petr Cech scrambled the ball clear.
The result now leaves Chelsea 5 points behind Tottenham in fourth place, and potentially 8 behind Arsenal who will play Aston Villa today.
