England call up Ross Barkley and Andros Townsend


England call up Ross Barkley and Andros Townsend

England manager Roy Hodgson has called up three youngsters for his squad to face Moldova and Ukraine for the World Cup qualifiers. Everton's Ross Barkley, and Tottenham Hotspurs' Andros Townsend, as well as Liverpool's Raheem Sterling.

These are the first call ups for Barkley, 19 and Townsend, 22, and could make their international debuts, while Sterling, 18 has played for England before.


Uncapped Celtic keeper Fraser Forster was also called up, to replace injured West Bromwich Albion keeper Ben Foster, who is ruled out for at least 12 weeks, and could be in line to make his debut.


 Southampton striker Rickie Lambert kept his place in the squad, after being selected last time out against Scotland in the friendly match which England won 3-2, with Lambert on target once. In Form Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge returns to the squad after injury.


 England play against Moldova at Wembley on the 6th September, before travelling to Kiev to take Ukraine. England are in second place in their group, two points behind leaders Montenegro, and with an extra game to play.
